Two Artists, One Journey: Connecting Through Music and Faith
This March, Kansas City will be treated to a special musical collaboration as Hudson Freeman and Brian Gerald Bulger take the stage at the Uptown Theater. Both artists have been shaping their music not only as a reflection of their surroundings but also as a way to process their shared histories as they grew up in faith-based environments.
Friendship Born in Faith
The roots of Freeman and Bulger's bond stretch back to 2016 when they first met at Missouri State University, participating in the same church group. This early connection, formed in a cozy coffee shop rather than a traditional church setting, laid the groundwork for a partnership that has flourished over the years. They both found solace in each other while navigating their experiences of stepping away from Evangelical traditions.
“I think that’s the first time we ever played together or did anything together,” Freeman reflects. Amidst their musical journeys, both have faced the challenges of growing up in a strict atmosphere, creating a unique framework for their work. This resulted in lyrics and melodies that resonate with not just their experiences but the collective feelings of friends who have traversed similar paths.
The Power of Shared Experience
Through a blend of live performances and personal storytelling, both artists have recognized that their musical expressions serve as a form of therapy and reflection. “Basically everyone in our community of friends has been going through a similar experience over the past years,” Freeman explains. Co-creating art not only sheds light on their struggles but also provides a sense of togetherness in a time that can often feel isolating.
Bulger, whose recent EP and memoir, Thank God I’m Far From Heaven, reflects on personal narratives intertwined with faith, emphasizes the value of friendship in this exploratory process. He shares, “It made it a lot less scary to not only deconstruct but also to write about those types of things in our music.” This sentiment is essential for both artists as they turn challenging experiences into meaningful art that speaks to their audience.
What to Expect at Their Upcoming Show
The upcoming performance promises an intimate evening where storytelling and music intertwine. The collaboration between Freeman’s folk-inspired sounds and Bulger’s lyrical depth ensures an engaging experience for all attendees. Music lovers across Kansas City can expect a night rich with emotion, connection, and perhaps a few light-hearted moments that define Freeman’s delightful stage presence.
