Kansas City Welcomes a New Voice in Theatre with The Signer
In an exciting cultural shift for Kansas City, Spinning Tree Theatre has unveiled its latest production, The Signer, written by Sarah Aptilon. This debut play follows the journey of Abby, a young and grieving dancer who travels to her family's coastal home in North Carolina. There, as she clears through memories and belongings with her father, she discovers a fascinating journal belonging to her Revolutionary War-era ancestor, William Hooper. This poignant exploration of intergenerational connection is beautifully executed by a cast that spans a range of ages and experiences.
A Unique Collaboration of Talent
The cast of The Signer features a blend of seasoned veterans, including Matt Rapport, Lynn King, and Doug Weaver, alongside promising young performers. The director, Michael Grayman-Parkhurst, articulates the fresh experiences this production offers to both the audience and the actors. “Our audiences don’t know what to expect. Our actors don’t have any expectations,” he explains, emphasizing the excitement surrounding new characters and stories on stage.
Echoes of History on Stage
Set against a backdrop enriched by history, the production showcases not only compelling storytelling but also meticulous set design that reflects the era. Grayman-Parkhurst notes the significance of the original wall from Hooper's childhood home, destroyed by British forces, as both a cinematic and thematic element. The remnants of this historical artifact become a character in itself, symbolizing the continuity of Abby’s journey and her ancestral ties.
Connecting Generations Through Performance
Drawing from her own familial experiences, Aptilon shares a deeply personal narrative. Inspired by her grandmother’s pocket watch, which belonged to Hooper, she intricately weaves together individual stories to highlight a universal theme of perseverance through times of uncertainty. The play not only aims to connect audiences with the past but also illustrates how experiences can resonate across generations—a sentiment echoed in similar intergenerational theatre initiatives like Silver Kite Community Arts in Washington.
Spinning Tree Theatre's Commitment to Community
Spinning Tree Theatre’s dedication to engaging local talent and fostering community connection is further exemplified through its partnership with SevenDays, a nonprofit which promotes kindness and inclusivity. This collaboration underscores the commitment of Spinning Tree Theatre to create a welcoming space for diverse artists and audiences. “Come take the journey,” invites Grayman-Parkhurst, encouraging the community to join in this exploration of life through the lens of dance, history, and familial love.
A Call to Experience The Signer
Residents of Kansas City are invited to experience The Signer running through April 26 at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center in Overland Park. This is a chance not only to witness local talent but also to be part of an intergenerational dialogue sparked by the stories portrayed on stage. Playwright Sarah Aptilon hopes that audiences will be swept away in the narrative, finding connections to their own lives within Abby's journey.
