Preparing Kansas City for the World Cup: A Training Revolution
The excitement of the FIFA World Cup is palpable, especially in Kansas City, where hospitality professionals are gearing up to welcome an influx of international visitors. To enhance this experience, the VisitKC Foundation is hosting a free Culture & Hospitality Training Series. This initiative serves to equip restaurant, hospitality, and customer-facing workers with the essential skills they'll need during the event. With an anticipated 650,000 tourists expected over thirty days, the responsibility to make a lasting impression is enormous.
Empowering Local Professionals
Facilitated by experts from The Protocol School of Washington, the training series will consist of three sessions aimed at enhancing service standards across various sectors. The first session, titled 'Heart, Passion, & Pride', is scheduled for April 7th at the National WWI Museum and is tailored for hospitality leaders. This session aims at understanding diverse cultural backgrounds in order to provide superior service that meets the expectations of international visitors.
With a focus on personality styles and universal human expectations, this session will set the stage for insightful discussions on how to create a truly welcoming environment. As shared by Jenny Wilson, the Vice President of Tourism Development at Visit KC, this training is not just beneficial for the hospitality industry, but it enhances Kansas City’s reputation as a tourist-friendly hub.
Adapting to Cultural Differences
The subsequent training sessions, both online and in-person, target different aspects of cultural interactions. For example, the second session—an online module—addresses cultural awareness for supervisors and managers, while the third session, 'Boots on the Ground', will provide hands-on insights for real-world applications in hospitality settings.
Topics will include how to navigate cultural differences, like varying tipping practices and shifts in mealtime customs, which can impact service delivery. Local business owner, Katrin Heuser of Affäre, emphasized the crucial need for training, stating, "There’s so many different cultures, and especially people in the Midwest, it’s not as international as the coasts." This training aims to bridge that gap.
Local Businesses’ Commitment to Excellence
Local businesses like McLain's Bakery are also stepping up to the challenge. Owner Mollie Lothman expressed her eagerness to learn how to better serve these diverse visitors and the impact this training will have on her staff. With plans to incorporate visuals into menus to overcome language barriers, Lothman illustrates the proactive approach local businesses are adopting to ensure a seamless experience for everyone.
Collaborative Efforts for Lasting Impression
As Kansas City prepares for world-class exposure, how residents and local businesses welcome international visitors could shape perceptions for years to come. The World Cup is an opportunity not just for economic growth, but also for Kansas City to shine on a global stage.
“We want them to leave with a positive impression,” Wilson said, emphasizing the importance of exceptional service during this time. The training series not only opens doors for better business practices but also establishes a lasting legacy of hospitality in Kansas City.
