Recently, the Friends of the Englewood, with the support of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation, successfully completed the purchase of the theater, marking a significant milestone for local culture. The acquisition, finalized for $600,000 in November 2025, signals not just the restoration of a building but the rekindling of community spirit.

The theater has now gained approval for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation is critical as it unlocks essential preservation tax credits—“Preservation tax credits are very, very potent because they are cash,” Schondelmeyer says. Although it originally seated over 1,000 guests, the new layout will comfortably accommodate 300 to 400 patrons, enhancing the intimacy of performances. This revamp aims not just to restore the building but to attract a wide range of events—from community plays and school performances to rock concerts and classic film screenings—ensuring there’s something for everyone in the community.
